Maikki Kivinen studied the restoration of paintings and polychrome sculptures in Florence at the Universitá Internazionale dell'Arte, Italy in 1988 to 1991.
She completed her practical training as a student conservator at the Finnish National Gallery, Atheneum, Helsinki in 1993.
In the Netherlands she attended various courses on conservation at the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage (the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage). She also deepened her knowledge in the restoration of paintings at the Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg, the training for restorers of paintings in the Netherlands.
