 Vasily

My name is Vasily, I am 47 years old and was born in Saint Petersburg. Together with my partner and our two-and-a-half-year-old son, I have been living in Amsterdam for over 20 years.

I come from a family of three generations of artists, in which my grandfather and father were professors at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. My mother is
an art historian and my older brother is a visual artist.
I have been painting and drawing since my earliest memories. At the age of twelve, I began my training at the Art School of the Academy of Arts.

After my time at the Art School, I continued my studies at the Academy of Arts. Although I have always been passionate about drawing and painting, I decided to deepen my training in
the restoration of paintings and icons.

During my studies, I had the opportunity to do an internship at SRAL in Maastricht, under the supervision of Kees Schreuder , and at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, Italy, under
the supervision of Giancarlo Raddi. After graduating, I started working at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, where I was responsible for restoring the collection, drawing up condition reports, organising objects for transport and courier work. I enjoyed working at this museum for five years.

In 2006-2007, I worked at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam on the restoration of Q.B. Brekelenkam's “Mother and Child” and researched the painting technique used in 26
paintings by this artist in Dutch museums and the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. This special experience with Dutch museums convinced me to continue my work in the Netherlands.

I then spent four wonderful years working as an employee at Paleis Het Loo in Apeldoorn.

In my spare time, I enjoy portrait painting and occasionally paint walls and ceilings in the classical style of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. After the coronavirus pandemic, I was asked by the Vrije Academie in Amsterdam to teach drawing classes. I also developed a course on “Basic Drawing Construction” and a workshop on “Perspective”.

After gaining a lot of experience working for museums, I decided to set up my own restoration studio in Amsterdam. My studio is located in the heart of the Jordaan district.
I have been working independently since 2010 and, as a restorer, I collaborate with many museums in the Netherlands, foundations and private collections.
